Something is going on here, and I think I know what it is. As we make the transition into the Digital Age we are losing focus on one another, in fact we are not even looking at one another. Caught up in texting, gaming, and an ever increasing amount of time being spent online or on our mobile devices we are multi-tasking to the point of not being willing or able to stop in the middle of it all and simply focus on the human being next to us.
When is the last time you spent with someone looking them in the eye, and having an interaction completely focused on one another, with no other distractions? When is the last time you had a conversation with your children with their and your full attention? Does anyone even have ‘family time’ anymore? We are all scattered to our own devices, even in the same room.
This has huge societal implications. Teachers are talking about it, parents are talking about it, teenagers are texting about it. As digital permeates we need to pay particular attention to the development of socialization skills in our children and grandchildren or we are going to be raising a generation of mutants.
Here’s looking at you kid.
